There have been more than 700 gay bars that have opened and closed their doors over the years in San Francisco. Up to and including the 1950's there were only a small handful of gay bars that had opened, but in the early 1960's they seemed to be opening up all over the place. Then the 70's hit and there was a mass explosion of every kind of gay bar you can imagine with the influx of the LGBT community. Since then bars have come and gone and many staples have remained. What became clear was that the LGBT community was here to stay because gay men and women alike were welcomed into the city with open arms.
