History Of Gay Bars Dallas

The gay culture in Dallas has changed a lot over the years. Gay bars have survived things like AIDS and more recently the smoking ban. In 1990, there was a rash of robberies and a murder in the gay bar district and little was done about it until the owner of Curious Times spoke out publicly stating that it was very seldom that there was a police presence in the neighborhood to help keep the community safe.

A huge hit to the gay community happened in 2002 when Donna Foster, the woman who opened the first lesbian bar in Dallas died. The loss was felt by everyone in the LGBT community as well as by all the gay bar Dallas owners as she was always a big supporter and voice for gay and lesbian rights.

In 2009, Dallas police conducted a bar inspection of the newly opened Rainbow Lounge. The inspection took place at 1:20 am and after just 30 minutes resulted in 19 arrests and one patron was severely injured. It is interesting to note that this 'inspection' happened EXACTLY 40 years to the date of the raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City. As a result of this the next day there were two protest marches scheduled for the next day. With all the media and pressure from the LGBT community the was a civil rights investigation conducted. There were 20 recommendations made, city employees received domestic partnership health insurance benefits and all city employees are now required to take a LGBT diversity training class. The injured patrons from the raid were given a financial settlement and 3 of the officers involved were fired while 3 more were suspended without pay for 4 days. Dallas has been fortunate to have a string of advocates and voices who have paved the way for the LGBT community, especially the gay bar Dallas owners over the years.
