Gay Bars Austin
Manplay.com will give you everything you need to know about Gay Bars Austin. The history of the gay bars Austin scene, what's happening and where it's happening. It's time to really live life, make plans, have a little fun, be who you want to be: Gay and Proud! Austin has a reputation as one of the gay-friendliest cities in all of Texas. It's very evident that both gays and lesbians are welcome in Austin far more than any other city in a very conservative Texas. It is quite shocking, though, that with a city that is so gay-friendly and has quite a large gay population, which continues to rise steadily, that there aren't more gay bars for the LGBT community to hang out in. You can literally make it to most of these bars in one night if you start out early enough. Although there may not be a ton of gay bars, at least the ones that are on our list are all a lot of fun and promise to deliver a good time!
History Of Gay Bars Austin
Gay bars Austin has an interesting history, the first well-known gay bar, Dirty Sally's, had a 30 year lifespan that started in 1968 and ran until 1988. It was the typical neighborhood bar, but the difference was that it was a gay bar. There was finally a place for local gay men (and women) to hang out and not be afraid of being on a date with someone of the same sex because this was the norm here. It was THE meeting place for so many of the LGBT community and where many gay men and women first had the opportunity to gather as a group and truly be who they were. It was the first place where drag queens could be drag queens and where men could share an intimate moment like holding hands or being affectionate with another man, in public, in Austin. Dirty Sally's helped to pave the way for the gay community. Then in the early 1980Õs, The Boathouse helped to 'break the lock' on the Warehouse District. It became well known across the country as the bar to perform at for Drag Queens and they came from all over the United States to do so. The Boathouse made its mark in the Warehouse District and soon more gay bars and clubs started popping up in the area.
These early gay bar pioneers saw a lot, dealt with a lot and in the end stood up for what it was that they believed in. They lived through raids, randomly set fires, hate crimes, AIDS, and still they persevered. Had the owners of the first gay bars in Austin not been willing to endure and move forward, gay bars Austin would not be as commonplace, friendly and welcoming as they are today.
